What is the Ecocosm? The "Ecocosm" is the whole Earth system with all of its interactions. "Ecocosm" comes from the Greek words "oikos" meaning "home" and "cosmos" meaning "universe". Humans today tend to separate themselves from the rest of the Ecocosm by using terms such as "natural" and "wild"; but, at this time in the Earth's history, humans are the most critical, integral component of the Ecocosm, which includes:
biological components such as the natural and human-engineered ecological systems of plants and animals on land, sea, and air; for example, soil, plankton, algae, carbon dioxide, and seaweed, astronomical components such as solar energy, solar wind, gravitational effects, electromagnetic flux, particulate matter from space, and other astrophysical forces, and the human presence in all of its physical, psychological, ethical, and spiritual aspects, especially as it interacts with the geological, biological and astronomical components through its reproduction and consumption. |
